In an effort to be prepared for the next major earthquake, all AESD Sites will be participating in the 2018 Great California ShakeOut earthquake drill on Monday, October 15, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. All employees, students, and volunteers are required to take part in this drill including staff participating in meetings and conferences with outside guests. Staff working in instructional settings with students should follow the identified procedures at the school/site. The drill will consist of employees, volunteers, and students observing the Drop, Cover and Hold On procedures followed by an evacuation of the building and roll call being taken outside at the designated assembly area. All employees and students are to remain in their assembly areas until the “All Clear” signal is given to return to normal. The Emergency Operations Center (EOC) will also be activated at the District Office Board Room and will be in operation following the drill from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. for administrative and school sites to report their status and for EOC members to debrief.
During the Drill
- At 9:30 a.m. on October 15, 2018, school sites will sound their alarms and announce that the earthquake drill has begun and to Drop, Cover and Hold On.
- Employees, volunteers, and students will Drop, Cover and Hold On for approximately 90 seconds (in the event of real earthquake until the shaking stops).
- The order to evacuate the building will be given after safety committee members have determined that it is safe to exit the building. Employees will follow evacuation procedures to exit the building to the designated assembly area or safe location. Committee members will conduct a sweep of the building to ensure that everyone has safely exited.
- All employees, volunteers, and students are to remain in the assembly area until roll call is completed and the “All Clear” command is given to return to work.
Thank you in advance for your assistance and for the important role that you and your staff play in ensuring the success of this year’s ShakeOut drill.
